DUSKY BROCADE

ADULT: Wingspan 36 to 42mm. A medium-sized species that can be quite variable with 3 distinct forms that can be similar to other species.  Generally, the ground colour can be dull grey to yellowish-brown and the cross-lines and stigmas are primarily etched in white. The antennae of the males are setose whereas those of the females are ciliate. LARVAE: The larvae feed on various grasses. Over-winters as a larvae before pupating underground in April. BEHAVIOUR: Attracted to light. HABITAT: A frequenter of woodlands, hedgerows, gardens, pastures and marshes. FLIGHT PERIOD: On the wing during late May to July. STATUS: A common species throughout much of Britain but rarely seen in great numbers.
